I got the part partially working (lots of software issues to resolve) when i noticed that the bmi160 chip has a very rough surface and no markings, as if the markings were scraped off. See the attached photo. This is obviously not how bosch ships chips, so it brought the chip’s origins into question. As a result, i asked for and promptly received a refund. I am very pleased with the aliexpress return policy, which gives me confidence to try new vendors and products.
The product description/schematic has a few things to note. The schematic shows 3.9k pullups to vin, but the board actually has 10k pullups to 3.3v. The bmi160 supports 1.7-3.6v operation, so you should not drive the i2c pins with a 5v pullup. You must use a level translator when using a 5v mcu in order to operate the bmi160 within specification.

It came with problems, the accelerometers are fine, but the gyroscopes generate uncontrolled values. I tried several libraries and adjustments at the startup of the registers and nothing worked. I will not request a refund because of the accelerometers that are working.
